DH Summer Workshop for Periodicals Research

2025 Leary Resource Development Grant winner Katherine D. Harris shares the following news about her upcoming summer workshop at the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI):

Join us June 8–12 (Week 1 of the DHSI) for a workshop on “DH Leadership” with Katherine D. Harris (San Jose State University), Glen Layne-Worthey (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), and Ray Siemens (University of Victoria).

The Foundations in Digital Humanities Leadership workshop at DHSI 2026 addresses the leadership challenges facing scholars and administrators working with digitally driven periodicals research. As scholarship on magazines, newspapers, and serial publications increasingly depends on digitization, platforms, and long-term infrastructure, researchers are often asked to lead projects, people, and programs without formal preparation.

This workshop is especially relevant for periodicals scholars, project leads, and department chairs seeking strategies to support digital research in uncertain budgetary climates. Participants will explore how to advocate for periodicals work, sustain it beyond grant cycles, and align digital scholarship with departmental and institutional priorities—focusing on leadership as a core scholarly responsibility rather than on tools alone.

In these times of austerity and uncertainty, it’s even more important to understand leadership and resource allocation for the long-term, especially if you’re grappling with technology, including AI, and need to figure out how to create a healthy Digital Humanities ecosystem.
