Digital Victorian Poetry Project Update
The Digital Victorian Periodical Poetry Project (PI Alison Chapman), generously funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, is delighted to announce a major site update! The new edition features:
- An expanded poetry index with over 3,000 new poems from seven additional periodicals: Argosy, Longman’s, Temple Bar, Poor Man’s Guardian, English Illustrated Magazine, Evergreen, and Pagan Review
- New attribution research for poets, poetry translators, and illustrators
- Over 800 new person records
- Over 500 newly transcribed and encoded poems
- Genre tagging for sonnets and sonnet sequences, a new sonnet taxonomy, index pages for different kinds of sonnets, and a sonnet search filter
- Three additional sub-collections of poems (sonnet sequences, Scottish poetry, and dog poems)

The Digital Victorian Periodical Poetry Project now includes over 19,000 poems (with page images and metadata) from full runs of 28 long Victorian periodicals, with substantial attribution research (including from publishers’ archives). It also includes a personography of over 4,800 poets, translators, and illustrators; and over 2,600 transcribed and encoded poems.
The project is based on the collaborative work of a team that includes undergraduate and graduate research assistants, research consultants, and the programming expertise of Martin Holmes at the University of Victoria’s Humanities Computing and Media Centre.
